With five million objects from five continents, stretching over 5000 years, it’s difficult to know where to start. Let us help you with an informative highlights tour.

Founded in 1753, the British Museum was the first national public museum in the world. Its origins lie in the will of physician, naturalist and collector Sir Hans Sloane who, over his lifetime (1660-1753), collected more than 71,000 objects, which he wished to be preserved after his death.

Over the centuries, the Museum has expanded both its collection and site. December 2000 saw the opening of the Queen Elizabeth II Great Court – with its spectacular glass and steel roof – which, at two acres, is the largest covered public space in Europe.

Among the highlights of the collection that we will visit are: the Egyptian galleries (containing an important collection of sculpture and “mummies” from one of the world’s earliest civilisations); the Rosetta Stone (which, because it contains the same text in three languages, provided a key to the understanding of Egyptian hieroglyphs); the Parthenon or Elgin Marbles (classical Greek marble statues from the Acropolis in Athens), the Assyrian Reliefs (which depict a lion hunt and date from 600BC and rank among the finest achievements of art in Assyria, modern-day Iraq), and the Lewis Chessmen (a set of elaborately worked chess pieces dating from around 1150AD, which form one of the Museum’s most popular and charming exhibits).
